Restricted and prohibited waste
Materials that cannot go in a standard skip, items accepted only when declared and paid, and how loads are classified at the disposal facility.
NT WASTE AWAY PTY LTD (ABN 74 665 665 485) accepts general waste and clean green waste in standard skip bins. The materials below are restricted or prohibited. This page forms part of, and must be read with, our Terms and Conditions.
1. Not accepted in standard skip bins
- Asbestos or suspected asbestos, including fibro.
- Liquids, including paint, oils and slurry.
- Hazardous or regulated waste, including chemicals, fuels, batteries, medical and biohazard waste.
- Gas bottles and other pressurised containers.
- Whitegoods containing refrigerants, such as fridges, freezers and air conditioners.
- Electronic waste, including printers, photocopiers, televisions, monitors, desktops and laptops.
- Aerosols, fluorescent tubes and other lamps containing mercury.
- Explosives, ammunition, flares and fireworks.
- Wet concrete, hot ash and burning materials.
These materials are not accepted through online booking. Televisions, monitors and other electronic waste are not available as a paid add-on item at any price. Where a compliant specialist service is available for a restricted material, it requires a separate written quote and our prior written approval. We do not represent that all hazardous waste can be accepted.
2. Accepted only when declared and paid as add-ons
Mattresses and car tyres are accepted only where they are declared and paid for as add-on items at the time of booking, and only in an appropriate general waste load. These items must not be concealed within the load and must not be placed in a green waste or heavy material load. Oversized, light-truck, semi-trailer, earthmoving and construction equipment tyres require a written quote and prior written approval.
3. Soils and clean fill
Soils, including clean fill, can only be accepted with prior Council approval and in accordance with the Land Use Contaminants Guidelines.
4. Classification and reclassification
All loads are assumed uncontaminated at booking. Loads are inspected at the disposal facility and may be reclassified. The decision of the weighbridge operator or disposal facility is final and binding. Any resulting increase in disposal cost is payable by you, and additional charges are calculated using the applicable disposal facility category and rate recorded for your booking.
5. Where restricted material can be taken
Restricted household items such as e-waste, paint, chemicals, gas bottles and batteries are generally accepted at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility or through City of Darwin and Northern Territory Government drop-off programs. Acceptance criteria, opening hours and fees are set by those operators and change from time to time, so check their current published guidance before travelling. Nothing on this page is a guarantee that a particular facility will accept a particular item.
6. Green waste loads
Clean green waste loads must contain garden material only. Mattresses, tyres and general rubbish must be booked as a separate general-waste load.
